In an article I wrote a few years ago defining and contrasting the new media celebrity mystique in the unequal company of substantive public figures; Bai Ling was one of my rhetorical attractions. A one time promising actress who found a lucrative residence in playing the role of the shallow connoisseur with a uniquely frivolous public disposition. A woman willing to avoid substance and the seriousness of her artistic craft in order to embrace the buffoonery of instant new media fame. She than had the contemptuous nerve to make me look reasonably foolish after a friend and fellow journalist of mine ran into her while we were both covering the huge earthquake that hit China what seems like ages ago. There was Bai Ling; small, dirty, disheveled, painfully ordinary, and strikingly anonymous to everyone but me and my buddy. He got the interview; and I got to stealthfully observe. She was compassionate with her actions, especially with the children; substantive in her careful use of words, smart in her understanding of the victims immediate needs and interests, and simply beautiful in expressing a spiritual pain and resilient hope that those earthquake survivors desperately needed at the time. Since than I regretted associating Bai Ling with that aforementioned published article. If you actually read these public posts on your website, and stumbled upon the article in question; I publicly and sincerely apologize to you. I would do so in person, but you would have to travel to Rome for that; and the city is booked for the next few days. A parting shot of genuinely sincere wisdom. You are damn smart; it's something you shouldn't keep to yourself. Good luck to you.
Good evening, Bai Ling! “We gather strength from sadness and from pain Each time we die, we learn to live again.” The sadness shall pass. You have made great strides, right after you had addressed your problem and you immediately began working on it. I applaud & admire you for that. Continue on this new path, as I have mentioned, never taking, not even one step back, to gain momentum as you strive to reach your ultimate goals. You are a great actress, with a wonderful heart. You will have tough days and nights ahead but ultimately, you will overcome, any adversity, that may come your way. In those moments of unexplained sadness, speak with a family member/friend, who will offer you good advice and comfort you, with their kind words, that will sooth your heart.
In the mean time, Concentrate on getting back on track and showing everyone, your talents, on the silver screen. Much love, Bai Ling
