Ian hiring photogs could be just a way of insuring that they get specific parts of the events covered that they want to use for future publicity and that they control the rights to the photos so they don't have to buy back photos of their event at a later date. Bloody shame.
I didn't know that Stone had an interest in My Lai, it makes sense though. Like Altman before him he is one of the few that snubs the Hollywood establishment - no wonder both Altman (before he passed on) and Stone have low outputs compared to others - and despite their insight and creativity, but film is expensive and somebody has to pay the bills.
War photographs by folks who really understand what's going on can be profound and powerful. Don McCullen and Philip Jones Griffiths (may he rest in peace) were 2 of the best (and they were both from... oh well :) It's not always important to even show the horror - Roger Fenton's photograph "The valley of the shadow of death. Dirt road in ravine scattered with cannonballs," shows nothing but dirt and cannonballs - but it does not take much of an imagination to comprehend what a horrible place that must of been when those cannonballs were falling falling from the sky onto that piece of ground.

Yeah Stone tried many places to get the backing for it but in the end it was a no go. In a way I wonder if he would have been the right man for the job? His last few films have not been his usual standard in my eyes. I don't know if he still has it in him like when he made platoon, natural born killers, JFK and so on.
I must admit there was always a part of me that wanted to be a War Photographer as it does tend to bring out the truth in people and lend itself to the most honest images of the dark side of humanity.
